Later, Lane attended and graduated from NC A&T State University, where he joined the ROTC program and subsequently applied his skills in the U. S. Airforce. His 28-year military career was distinguished and decorated and retired as Lieutenant Colonel in 1984. Thereafter, he returned to Lumberton, NC and was elected to the Lumberton City Council, representing Precinct #5.
A man of faith, Lane joined Antioch Baptist Church at an early age and remained an active member throughout his life.
